Every Thursday, our Safe at Home volunteer team gets together to improve the life of community members in need. The team performs tasks and installs upgrades for elderly homeowners facing mobility and safety issues.
Last week, the team visited the Bryans, a couple who are 90 and 73 years old. Both homeowners suffer from decreased mobility, and as a result, have a difficult time moving around their home. Because they live in a mobile home, they have to use stairs to enter and exit. By replacing the existing stairs with half steps, the Bryans are able to get up and down much more easily.
The team installs half steps on a weekly basis. These steps are modified to cut the height of each step in half, and also lengthen the run of each step. They can even be constructed for use with a walker, if it is required.
Raised toilets were also installed, and grab bars installed in the shower and at various entries help the Bryans feel more secure while in their home.
As always, we want to thank all of our volunteers for their time, hard work, and dedication to needy homeowners throughout our community, and Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley We are always excited for new volunteers to join our team, so if you are interested, please contact us at: [email protected], or (408) 578-9519!
