What is Safe At Home

Central to our vision of a safe and healthy home for everyone, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley’s Safe at Home program addresses home repair and maintenance issues that may otherwise present a safety risk or that limit access to or within the home. Prior to all repairs, a qualified staff member will perform an onsite needs-based assessment to identify potential home repair and maintenance tasks primarily focused on, but not limited to:

• Fall Prevention
• Accessibility/Mobility
• Aging In Place
• Weatherization/Energy Efficiency
• Home & Fire Safety

Safe At Home Terminology

• Fall Prevention

  Environmental factors play a part in approximately half of all falls that occur at home. Sometimes falls can be caused by slipping and tripping hazards, other times a simple routine such as stepping into a house or shower can cause a homeowner life-changing injuries. Incorporating preventative measures such as grab bars or half steps into a persons routine can keep them mobile for many years to come.

• Accessibility/Mobility

  Many living spaces do not lend to senior and disabled mobility. For many of our homeowners, this is compounded with the fact that they are on a fixed income and unable to make the necessary mobility improvements. Providing a ramp or the widening of a doorway can extend a homeowner’s independence.

• Aging In Place

  “Aging-in-place”, means remaining in one’s home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. Incorporating several aging-in-place measures means the reassurance of being able to call a house a “home” for a lifetime.

• Weatherization/Energy Efficiency

  Simple changes to a door, window or light bulb can make a significant difference for a home’s warmth and heating costs. Our weatherization and energy efficiency services are cost-effective measures that will make an instant difference.

• Home and Fire Safety

  Over the years, many safety measures are neglected in most homes. Changing a battery in a smoke detector can help avoid loss of life while a motion security light can deter unwanted persons on a homeowner’s property.

Interested homeowners must:

• Demonstrate a need for safety/accessibility repairs
• Own a home within our service area
• Be the primary residence of the applicant(s) and/or qualifying household member(s)
• Have a household income below 80% AMI (see eligibility chart)
• Be in good-standing with regards to Mortgage Loans, Property Taxes and Park Manager (for applicants that live in mobile homes) should they apply
